BURNTWOOD SCHOOL

Client London Borough of Wandsworth/Lendlease
Value £40.9 Million
Status Completed 2014

Whilst an Associate Director at Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Ben Gibson led the Stirling Prize winning Burntwood School project.

Burntwood School is the remodelling of an original 1950s modernist education campus conceived by the LCC under Sir Leslie Martin. Six new buildings are located within an existing, mature landscape, complementing two retained buildings to provide a new secondary school for 2000 pupils and 200 staff in Wandsworth.

The new buildings comprise four curriculum buildings, a news sports hall and a new performing arts building. The arrangement of principle buildings and landscape creates a coherent campus with a range of external spaces. A series of lawns, squares and a central pedestrian spine creates a legible, rich landscape for students and staff to enjoy throughout the day.

The structure and façades of each new building relates to the strategy of the original campus: Large-span, communal buildings have a steel frame with light-weight cladding; whilst the more cellular, curriculum buildings are constructed from a concrete frame with pre-cast concrete cladding.
