Future Reception was an ideas competition organised by Derwent London, Office Concierge and the Architects’ Journal. We were runners-up and our proposal included in the Derwent London exhibition.
In order to speculate about a Future Reception we first considered the future trends of work:
The virtual office is a no-where space where anything can happen, but nothing actually does. Instead we propose that technology and its place within the future office will enable greater interaction: engagement with others beyond the traditional boundaries of the office and the ability to create a memorable place.
Perhaps the most palpable consequence of our recent working patterns is that working hours have extended and become more irregular. This places an even greater need on our working environments to be smarter, more adaptable and to sustain life beyond the desk.
Future Reception is therefore a changeable place that enables large volumes of tenants and visitors to enter the building efficiently, whilst also being appropriately used by only a few people beyond the traditional hours of work. It is a place that is an extension of the city, which can become an exhibition space, a fashion show, a bar.
Future Reception is also a bespoke service. It enables tenants to choreograph their own entrance sequence for visitors. It provides services for tenants – conferencing, break out, food and drink, dry cleaning, bookings – enabling more time for fun, as well as work.
Above all Future Reception is an architectural proposition (supported by technology, not superseded by it) that is about making a place.
